South Korean elementary-school teacher questioned over fatal stabbing of pupil

A South Korean elementary school teacher is under police investigation for allegedly stabbing a first-grade student to death in Daejeon. The female suspect, in her 40s, had recently returned to work after medical leave and had been receiving treatment for depression since 2018. The girl was found in an audio-visual room and later pronounced dead at a hospital. The tragedy has shocked the nation, prompting acting President Choi Sang-mok to order a review of school safety measures. The school remained closed on Tuesday as mourners left flowers and condolence messages at its gate.
